If Tai Chi is a martial art,why is it practiced slowly?

First things first,all of tai chi is not practiced slowly. Some systems are practiced very quickly and others are practiced slow with quick bursts of motion. The authentic name is t'ai ji quan which means "greatest extreme
boxing" . So when you practice the form, you are studying the extremes of lightness and heaviness,fullness and emptiness,static and fluid etc.
 Why is a lot of tai chi in slow mo? From a martial perspective it's to increase your speed .WHOT?{+_><.Ok,do you remember the water powered rockets? When you would pump and compress the base of the rocket with water and then release the compression and they would take off very quickly.Try to slowly shift your weight from one leg to the other,what you will notice after a while, is a feeling of compression that you wouldn't notice in an activity that you would do quickly.In Tai Chi,this a type of hydraulic force that is compressed in the lower torso and perfectly released into your point of contact. Now you have full body mass behind everything you do combined with maximum velocity.
Another consideration about martial arts is the amount of misinformation  about what a martial art is.
The original character for martial arts in Chinese is "WU"roughly translated as a practice leading to a "permanent end to conflict".
When you are training for"sport fighting"(tournaments,UFC,MMA,etc.),are you training for a "permanent end to conflict"?Absolutely not..
"A permanent end to conflict" doesn't need to be the art of killing someone either.A great question for a martial artist would be; "when and where does the conflict begin and how could this conflict end, permanently?
Not to mention, that in a modern context,the art of conflict resolution could more effectively translate to relieving the conflict within ourselves while developing more evolved ways of handling pressure from the outside.Tai Chi Push Hands is an ideal practice for this very thing!!

I am also a martial arts student and understand the important of Gi in this sport. Without Gi it very difficult to perform high kicks in practice session. According to me, it is the most essential equipment in martial arts.
