Tai Chi for Sleep Improvement

March is Roswell Tai Chi's Sleep Improvement Month

A Harvard Medical Study reports  In a University of California, Los Angeles, study 
of 112 healthy older adults with moderate sleep complaints, 16 weeks of tai chi improved the quality and duration of sleep significantly more than standard sleep education. The study was published in the July 2008 issue of the journal Sleep.

Several of our students have shared their experience with improvements in sleep patterns within a few days of beginning Tai Chi classes. One of the reasons why Tai Chi improves sleep is because its an exercise that both energizes and relaxes. Also, it moves an individual into an alpha brain wave state that simulates sleep. in his workshops and books,William CC Chen  refers to the 2 mental functions of Tai Chi as being fully awake and fully asleep. This correlates to the beginning and ending of each movement and the spaces in between the movements. One being yang (fully awake) and yin (fully asleep). This is just one more way that Tai Chi balances yin and yang in the mind, allowing the student to gain better control of their brain wave patterns.

To quote one student, “Ever since I moved back to Atlanta, I have had trouble sleeping, within 2 weeks of coming to your class, I have slept better than I have in years”. Another student said, “I can't believe how much better I am sleeping, I didn't even know this could was one of the benefits of Tai Chi".

As a student, I always have a hard time when sleeping. I think that it is because I do not have a proper time or schedule when to sleep and when to wake up. When you are a college student, there are days that you can sleep early and most of it is you won't sleep. Because of this change, our sleeping is weakening, which means that we could have problems with our sleep. Thanks to this blog that suggested a way that can help improving our sleep. I am not familiar with tai chi, but I think that it could really help.
